Official: Swisscom to launch iPhone in Switzerland — 3G, GPS, mobile TV, video conferencing rumored

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

by Thomas Ricker, posted May 14th 2008 at 3:16AM

So there was a little rumor bouncing about yesterday which claimed that Swisscom would land the iPhone. Today, Swisscom confirmed the deal while saying little else. What’s interesting then is what the rest of the rumor, started by the leading Swiss newspaper, Le Matin, had to say. Namely, the 3G iphone will be on sale in Switzerland this summer (on sale in the US by June) offering 2-way video chats, mobile TV and GPS navigation all powered by an even beefier processor. That certainly sounds like the same 3G iPhone we’re expecting to pop at WWDC now doesn’t it?

MSI Wind to land in the US; specs made official

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Yet another ultra-portable to be coming to the market, the MSI Wind is expected to become available here in the US on June 3, 2008 and similar to other notebooks in its class it will be offered with a choice of either Linux Novell or Windows XP Home as the operating system.

Aside from the difference in OS, there are only a few other small details that vary between models. Both will offer a 10-inch display with a 1024 x 600 resolution, an Intel 945 GMS chipset, a 2.5-inch 80GB SATA hard drive, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, a 4-in-1 card reader, 3 USB ports and a built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam.

The Linux version will ship with a 3-cell battery and come with 512MB of RAM, while the Windows version will offer a larger 6-cell battery and have 1GB of RAM installed, it will also be Bluetooth equipped.

The dimensions are also just about the same with both models measuring in at 10.23 x 7.08 x 0.75-inches, and thanks to the smaller battery the Linux version will weigh in at a slightly lower 2.3-pounds as compared to the 2.6-pounds of the Windows version.

The price, at least according to MSI will be at “an affordable sub $500 price point.”

Sarotech’s Wizplatz W-31 looks like a book, isn’t

If you felt like your Western Digital My Book hard drive went too far — or didn’t go too far enough — in looking like an actual tome, Sarotech is here to turn it up a notch. When you absolutely, positively must have a drive that looks like a fake book, you can do no better than the Wizplat W-31 (yes, really). The SATA-drive-sporting, USB 2.0 device features an internal power supply, ample vents for keeping your drive cool, and a slick, sexy exterior that says, “Hey, I’m a book.” All this luxury can be yours for the low, price of ₩121,000 (about $120) for a 320GB version, up to ₩315,000 ($312) for the 1TB model. Too bad this only appears to be available in Korea right now.

Creative gets official with Vado cheapcorder

JR.com may have let the cat of the bag, but Creative’s not letting that stop it from getting all official with its new Vado Pocket Video Cam, which is taking square aim at the likes of Pure Digital’s Flip Video cheapcorder. Like the Flip, Creative’s offering comes packing a lowly-but-YouTube-friendly 640 x 480 resolution, along with 2GB of built-in memory (with no expansion options), a 2-inch display, a flip-out USB connector, and a promised two hours of battery life on a charge. Not exactly the most feature-packed camera out there (even for a budget model), but the $100 price tag is certainly right, and you can get it in your choice of silver or hot pink.

BlackBerry touchscreen phone to be dubbed ‘Thunder’

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

by Joshua Topolsky, posted May 13th 2008 at 12:42PM

The industrious Boy Genius has apparently unearthed more juicy tidbits about that rumored blackberry touchscreen device. Word from BG is that the new iphone-ish handset is now internally dubbed the “Thunder,” and will come to Verizon and Vodafone as an exclusive device. The phone will reportedly have four physical keys (send, end, menu, and back), sport a hybrid CDMA EV-DO Rev. C / GSM HSPA radio, and could come equipped with a 4G LTE component. Outside Waterloo’s labs, the device could be known as the BlackBerry 9500 — though it’s possible that designation could change. BGR has included a self-made mockup (above) of what the device may look like, but as of now, no one has laid eyes on this mythical creature.

Puzzle Alarm Clock

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

I think the Puzzle Alarm Clock will be pretty frustrating to get used to in the beginning, as you will need to have an alert brain before you can turn the darn thing off. Featuring a 3-piece jigsaw puzzle, you must assemble it correctly - sounds easy? Apparently not. When the alarm rings, this devil of an alarm clock will shoot out all three pieces, so you’ll need to actually find those before putting it back in, and that act alone ought to be enough to wake you up for good.

This “eye opener” of a gadget is an alarm clock come 3-piece jigsaw puzzle in one. When it’s time to leave your incredibly cosy bed each morning, not only will your ears be treated to a fantastic ringing melody, a 3-piece jigsaw puzzle randomly shoots out. So what you ask? Well, in order to turn off a ringing alarm, you must solve the jigsaw puzzle, assembling it back on to the clock. Seems easy…not! It’s a great way to get up though, as by the time you’ve found all 3 pieces of the jigsaw puzzle and solved it, you’ll be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready for the day ahead.

The Puzzle Alarm Clock retails for £19.98.
