AMD plans to go 12-core in 2010, compete with Intel’s 8-core

Friday, May 9th, 2008

An announcement made just the other day by AMD indicates that their previous 8-core processor roadmap has now been pitched into the bin. The future holds a 12-core chip from AMD, coming in the second half of 2010. Dubbed Magny-Cours, the server world will see the benefits of what could easily be called “extreme multi-cores”. In an attempt to satiate the massive bandwidth required by a 12-core chip churning away at high speed, Magny-Cours will receive a seemingly lightweight 6MB of L3 cache shared among all cores. The chip will support DDR3 memory and, according to AMD, is easier to make than an 8-core chip.

A 6-core version, called Sao Paulo, will also be coming out in 2010. The 6-core chip will be a single package, similar to Barcelona’s 4-core chip. The 12-core version will include two 6-core chips alongside each other in a single package.

AMD has not been doing well financially, and is currently planning on laying off more than 1,600 workers by the third quarter of 2008. AMD is planning this 12-core version to compete with Intel in that timeframe. Intel’s current roadmap will have a 6-core Xeon out this year, with an 8-core version as their follow-on in 2009. AMD’s desire to introduce the 12-core chip is an attempt to gain marketshare in server spaces. Today, Intel accounts for 78.5% of all x86-based sales in server spaces.

Camouflage your power cable with Knit Komputer Kord Kozy

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Was that meant to be a tongue (cord) twister ? Probably. And I must confess that I it was extremely difficult for me to pronounce it straight even once.

But that doesn’t have any bearing on what the product called Knit Komputer Kord Kozy can do for your computer’s power cable. Because, the designer of this brilliant product seems to have gotten it right. Completely. The hand-knit Knit Komputer Kord Kozy can shield the power cable within and gently guide it to the power slot. And if that’s not appealing enough, this cover (made from high quality ribbon-style yarn) can also be custom ordered in any color or length you need. A wonderful idea to deck out the power cord. Get yours from Etsy at $4.

Attack Robot 1, Pleo 0

Friday, May 9th, 2008

If you are a fan of things cute and cuddly, then I suggest you move onto the next blurb right now. If you are a fan of things cute and cuddly being completely decimated by a viscous homemade attack robot, then you my friend may have issues. But feel free to continue.

Today I give the technological version of the Roman Coliseum. A place where the blood that was shed in Roman times has been replaced with the electronics, motors, batteries, wires and the sweat of those who labored to build such visceral robotic warriors. If you’ve ever seen the television shows Robot Wars or BattleBots, you know about the techno carnage I am talking about. Only today, we aren’t speaking about evenly matched robotic opponents. We’re talking a cute little dinosaur robot versus a robotic death machine.

In one corner there is featherweight Pleo made by company Ugobe. He is the adorable robotic dinosaur that walks, cries and behaves like a baby Camarasaurus. In the other corner, Vicious Verdic. He’s a middleweight veteran in the robot combat arena with high speed rotating blades of destruction, leaving many of his challengers shredded in his wake.

The video of the match is not pretty. Pleo lovers look away.

Perfect Spheres of Ice

Friday, May 9th, 2008

One of the things that I love about airline travel is the ice cubes in the drinks they serve. I always liked the cylindrical shaped cubes that were somehow hollowed out in the middle. Somehow, they were always better than the cubes that you crack out of the ice trays at home.

It appears that a Japanese company has cornered the market on unusual ice cube shapes with the Ice Mold, a spherical ice cube maker.

Oddly enough, the Ice Mold doesn’t work the way I expected it to. I thought that what would happen is that water would be put into a small sphere, and the machine would freeze it somehow. Then the sphere would be split in two down the planned seam.

Actually, all you have to do is put an ice cube or chunk of ice, and the Ice Mold forms the ice into a perfect sphere, with absolutely no seams at all.

Believe it or not, a spherical ice cube will melt more slowly, and will reduce its volume evenly. This Ice Mold can make ice balls in 55, 65, 70, and 80 mm sizes. Believe it or not, it can actually make 30-40 ice balls an hour!

Now, if they could make a machine that could make snowballs, that would be even more useful.

How-to guide repurposes phone jack as hidden storage portal

Friday, May 9th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted May 8th 2008 at 10:34AM

First things first: this guide is absurdly complicated for what you get, but if you’re the kind who thinks the journey is half the fun, you’ll likely be in nerd heaven. In an attempt to make an easily accessible hidden storage disk, one Doppelgangergang hacked up an unused phone jack, a 4GB flash drive and a USB / phone cable. After a good bit of splicing, cutting and soldering, a custom phone line-to-USB cable emerged, enabling him to discreetly access the data with mum and dad assuming he was simply doing research over that trusty 56k connection. Really, MacGyver would give mad props here — tap the read link to see if you’re up for the challenge.

O2, Carphone Warehouse still have iPhone’s in stock after all

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Now is the time to stop wetting your pants, Apple fanboys. Like the boy who cried wolf, it seems our earlier report pertaining to Carphone Warehouse and O2’s lack of iPhone stock in the UK was a mere case of misinformation. Apparently, O2 was just “in the process of replenishing 16GB iPhone stocks,” while Carphone Warehouse is “reviewing the stock situation for 16GB iPhones sold through its website, but added that its stores now have them in stock.” Stocks of the 8GB model are also being considered, although just putting more 16GB iPhones would definitely be a no-brainer. With great demand for the iphone all across the world right now, what kind of handset retailer would you have to be to not offer the consumers what they want? We’re not sure what exactly, but one thing we know is that O2 and Carphone Warehouse are definitely not like that.
