Google Apps designer shares design guidelines

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

One of the many things I love about Google is it’s design. Every design interface of each app and product is innovative and user-friendly, which is why more and more websites are copying its simplicity. Recently at the WritersUA conferece, Google’s User Designer for Google Apps John Wiley, shared the design guidelines they follow at Google.

Here are Google’s Design Guidelines:

  • Useful: focus on people - their lives, their work, their dreams.
  • Fast: every millisecond counts.
  • Simple: simplicity is powerful.
  • Engaging: engage beginners and attract experts.
  • Innovative: dare to be innovative.
  • Universal: design for the world.
  • Profitable: plan for today’s and tomorrow’s business.
  • Beautiful: delight the eye without distracting the mind.
  • Trustworthy: be worthy of people’s trust.
  • Personable: add a human touch.

No wonder Google’s homepage looks really simple. No too much information and clutter unlike it’s rival Yahoo. Google’s guiding philosophy is to “focus on the user and all else will follow.” For example, Google adds a human touch with the doodles and the “I’m feeling lucky” feature. Such makes user experience a very productive and easy one.

Much has been said about how Google designs delight the users. But only one thing will remain true: Google is everything described in the guidelines.

Gadget Display shows you important info about your PC

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

There are many different things about your computer that are good to keep an eye on, especially if you’re one that enjoys pushing your PC to the limit. I tend to push my PC pretty hard, which means I need to keep an eye on the temperatures at all times. There are generally two options here: keep a software monitor running on desktop taking up valuable screen space, or you can have an lcd monitor installed on the front of your computer. Neither one is all that appealing to me, which is why I’m intrigued by this Gadget Display.

This little gadget is a 2-inch color LCD screen which connects to  your PC via USB. You can set this anywhere, likely near your monitor somewhere.  It can display dozens of different things ranging from a clock, CPU and RAM usage. We don’t have a lot of information on this little gadget, however, there is likely a way to get this to display other things such as your CPU or motherboard temperature.

Glowing wall socket reminds you to conserve power by wasting power

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

If all the buzz marketing about recycling stuff and conserving power isn’t enough to win you over, this new concept for a glowing household power outlet might. It’s basically an ordinary power outlet that has a hidden LED that glows red when a plug stays connected for a certain amount of time (read: too long). The red glow becomes brighter as more energy is used, prompting you to kindly unplug and turn your stuff off. Now I have to admit, this is a great idea, but I can’t help but wonder if the creators of this concept ever realized that for this thing to work, it is going to need power. So from what I can see, this glowing socket tries to remind users to stop wasting power, when it’s wasting the power itself by shining with that bright red glow. I hope they find another way to power this thing or else, it’s going to be nothing but an oxymoron—an electric power saver that runs on electric power itself.

Cellink of Korea has launched a new USB microSD memory card reader that is built into a mobile charger, targeting the Korean market specifically. The Cellink T doubles up as a portable data storage when you slide it open, and if you need to charge your handset, change it to swing mode instead. In addition, it makes for the perfect intermediary tool to transfer data like photos, videos and music from a phone to PC and vice versa. No idea if this will be exported outside of Korea or not.

Palm gains more losses by the million, delays release of Palm Treo 800w until summer

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

Sad news for Palm Treo and Windows Mobile fans: Palm CEO Ed Colligan recently announced a $31.5 million net loss for Palm and said that “new Windows Mobile Treos” are “not coming out this quarter,” then follows it up with saying the new Windows Mobile Treo smart phone should be available by the end of this year’s summer. I like how Mr. Colligan uses the term “new Windows Mobile Treos” (note that it’s Treos, with an S) when he could actually just as easily say that the Palm Treo 800W will be having a slight delay in coming out. I almost don’t want to believe that they can’t do anything about this and release their new WinMo Treos sooner, when they know very well that they need it to salvage their flailing enterprise.
