Sony’s Rolly tumbles into FCC, stumps them too

Okay, so after watching this thing bust a move on video, we actually aren’t as perplexed by it as we once were, but there’s no denying that Sony’s Rolly is quite the curious character. Nevertheless, the SEP-30BT (opposed to Japan’s SEP-10BT) has hurtled itself into the open arms of the FCC, assuring Americans that the time has almost come. There’s nothing too shocking within the 70 (!) page manual, but if you just can’t wait for this critter to land at your doorstep, tap the read link below and eat your heart out.

Our week o’ Dell scoops continues with what Dell calls its “mainstream” and “essential” series of Latitude E-series laptops. While the enterprise-ready, mainstream series packs just about everything (and more) that you could hope for in a balanced spec-for-size lappie, the essential series is only essential if you’re on a tight budget and just can’t live without the comparatively low-end chub. The 15.4-inch E6500 and 14.1-inch E6400 models will replace Dell’s D830 and D630 whereas the “essential” 15.4-inch E5500 and and 14.1-inch E5400 carry on the low-end tradition of Dell’s D531 and D530. With any luck, these will be Dell’s first Montevina / Centrino 2 class machines if they all hit the targeted June release date as planned. AMD fans will see the E5500a and E5400a configurations at about the same time. So what can you expect under the hood? Well, just look at the 5.1-pound E6500 which reads like a suit’s, geek fantasy:

  • UWB, Bluetooth 2.1, mobile broadband
  • Integrated GPS, yes GPS
  • New 84WHr slice batteries for “all day” computing
  • LED backlighting, 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution, discrete nVIDIA graphics and DisplayPort out
  • Hard, Hybrid, and Solid State disk drive options with eSATA jack for more
  • Optional camera and mic
  • Plenty of security options including contact-less smart cards and encrypted hard disks

Time to pad those budgets a bit, eh CIOs? Full low-down in the gallery below.

Dell releases more info on the highly anticipated Latitude series

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

Here at Gadgetell, as I am sure you do also, love to see information leaked early, this time it involves Dell’s highly anticipated Latitude series. What we have learned are some more details involving two new E-Series models, the E6500 and the E6400. The E6500 is the more advanced of the two, and it begins with a 15.4-inch screen as opposed to the E6400’s 14.1-inch. Interestingly enough, these two laptops are set to replace the D830 and the D630.

The E6500 comes with UWB, Bluetooth 2.1, and mobile broadband. One of the best features is this laptop comes with integrated GPS, which is a rarity still in many laptops on the market today. Additionally, the E6500 comes with high quality batteries, 84WHr, able to keep your laptop running all day on a single charge. It’s 15.4-inch screen always comes with LED backlighting and a 1920 x 1200 resolution, nVIDIA graphics, and DisplayPort. No word on exact hard disk space, but it comes with a Solid State disk and an eSATA port for additional storage. If you want, you can purchase an optional webcam and microphone, no word on how much extra you would have to pay for these. It even comes with advanced security measures such as contact-less smart cards, and even encrypted hard disks.

These laptops come with a lot of good features, but I’m sure they are going to cost a helluva lot of money. No word on exact pricing as of now, but these laptops are slated for a June release. Stay tuned for more information as it comes out.

Kiss Me Phone

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

There is nothing quite like a red hot pair of lips to get your blood coursing through your veins, and this Kiss Me Phone is more than able to cause that effect in any hot-blooded male at first glance.

Hard-wired phones seem to have moved from essential to retro in virtually no time at all, and this landline phone cleverly disguised as a sexy pair of lips is no exception - indeed it’s more of an objet d’art than a phone. Nevertheless it’s still irresistible. Whether you’re a lothario or a vamp, or just into retro kitsch, the Kiss Me Phone is a piece of kit that pushes all the buttons, in a manner of speaking. It comes with UK and European telephone cables, has a push button operation concealed in the top lip, and is just crying out for some hushed, wicked and no doubt lascivious conversation.

This 22cm x 12cm x 5cm novelty phone retails for £19.99 and is a surefire conversation starter in more ways than one.

Sony’s $50 “Fresh Start” now free, but still requires a $100 Windows Vista Business ‘upgrade’

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

Sony’s “Fresh Start” program will be getting a slight change, well actually the service will remain exactly the same in keeping that junk off your computer, however it will no longer cost $50. Sony has been kind enough to offer it “free of charge,” but sadly the “Fresh Start” option still requires users to also have an ‘upgrade’ to the pre-installed Windows Vista Home, users must instead have Windows Vista Business installed, which will set you back an extra $100.

“Starting March 22, Sony will offer Fresh Start free of charge. We want VAIO users to have the best experience possible with our PCs, and we believe Fresh Start will help ensure that happens right out-of-the-box.”

Thanks Sony, you are so kind, now my $150 “Fresh Start” will only cost me $100. Putting that aside, let’s also talk about giving anyone who was foolish enough to pay for that “Fresh Start” a refund or credit.

Even happier ending for “cleaned” Xbox 360 owner: Gates-signed console arrives

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

Remember that dude Nathaniel whose highly sentimental autographed Xbox 360 console was sent in for repairs and returned maddeningly clean? Turns out he didn’t just get a signed Halo 3 care package. Even more swag arrived this week, including (among other things) an Xbox 360 with signatures from the 360 team and Bungie, and even Bill G himself. Yeah, that Bill G. And we can tell you exactly how damned hard it is to get the man to autograph stuff, the last few times we saw him we asked him sign our chests — no dice. The G-man’s infamous signature after the break. Us? We’re closing the book on this one — well played, Microsoft.

Averatec 2575 notebook released

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

Averatec isn’t exactly the biggest player around when it comes to notebooks, but it does have a fair market presence and technological background to come up with something interesting once in a while. Today we have the Averatec 2575 notebook that makes inroads into the ultra portable notebook PC market with its 12.1″ offering. I’m curious to see how this model will stack up against the rest of similar notebooks in the market – will it be able to hold its own and move a fair number of units, or will it be another choice people will pass over? Head on to read an excerpt from the press release right after the jump.

Averatec, Inc., a leader in innovative mobile electronic products, continues to expand its line of full-featured ultra-thin, ultra portable notebooks with a brand new 12.1″ offering. The new 2575 model boasts contemporary industrial design and incorporates power of AMD’s Turion 64 X2 dual-core mobile technology. Averatec’s powerful, yet efficient design not only runs cool to the touch, but provides style not normally found in ultra-portable, ultra-light form factors.

According to Darren Lee, Director of Marketing at Averatec, “We are very excited with the introduction of our 2575 model. The introduction of this product marks a new era for Averatec on our notebook product line and will provide a great foundation for our upcoming All-in-One desktop product launch.”

Some of the features one can expect from the Averatec 2575 includes a 12.1″ widescreen display with Averatec’s exceptional AveraBrite LCD technology, an integrated 1.3 megapixel webcam, a 250GB hard drive and 2GB of RAM. Windows Vista Home Premium will be the operating system of choice, and the Averatec 2575 retails for $1,099, accompanied by a one-year limited warranty (half the time for the battery).

LG’s take on an iPhone killer: LG LH2300 Touch Web phone

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

Although it might be a bit late, LG believes it’s better than never, and offers a touch screen equipped web browsing-centric phone called the LG LH2300 Touch Web phone for the Korea market. The name actually says it all. “Touch,” as in it has a 3-inch, 800 x 480 pixel, 26 million color, touch sensitive display that’s produced by Sharp. “Web,” as in it should offer unparalleled web browsing experience on a handheld, as if that was unheard of before. And “phone,” as in it’s a regular mobile phone that you can use to send short text messages and make choppy voice calls. It’s slated for an April 2008 release date and will cost around $600 USD. But again, like I said in the beginning of this post, this will only be available in Korea. For now, at least.

The LG LH2300 runs on a unique, drag-and-drop user interface that uses icons in almost every aspect of operation. For example, you can arrange icons of your favorite contacts on the desktop (standby screen) of your phone and when you want to send any one of them a message, you simply type up your message and drag it on top of the intended recipient. And then to make calls, you simply drag the icon of the contact you wish to call on top of the call button and you’ll be good to go. These are very interesting features but at this point I’m not sure how well these would really work in real life.

In addition to the refreshingly new UI of the LG Touch Web phone, it also features a 3-megapixel camera with auto focus lens, image stabilization and face tracking technology. It can connect with other devices via Bluetooth, has a DMB tuner for mobile TV, and supports additional microSD card through its card slot.

Unfortunately, the LG LH2300 Touch Web phone will only be available in the Korea market for now, but who knows? Maybe if it turns out quite successful there, optimized GSM versions will be hitting our shores soon after. Or maybe you can ask a friend in Korea, if you have one, to import a Touch Web phone just like how people did it with the iphone back then.
