Microsoft drops Xbox 360 HD DVD drive

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Looks like it is end of the road for hd dvd even on the gaming side, as Microsoft has decided to drop the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive. For those who have picked up this peripheral, don’t worry too much about your warranty as Microsoft will continue to offer warranty support for it. I don’t think a warranty is really necessary in this case anyway since you will hardly use your HD DVD drive anymore with no more new movies being released for it in the foreseeable future. Well, unless you’d like to use it as a mere DVD player, of course - but then again, who doesn’t already have a dedicated DVD player (or two) in the home? Guess the high definition game now belongs to Sony.

CB radio updated with Bluetooth capabilities

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

There was once a time when the CB radio was considered high-tech. While the technology is still in use today, it’s tough to see it as cutting-edge. Don’t worry though, Cobra Electronics has brought the CB into the 21st Century by adding in Bluetooth.

I was a bit curious about what you would do with a Bluetooth CB radio, but it really makes sense. Since truckers are going to carry cell phones, why not take their existing communication device and turn it into a headset for their phone? Aside from the Bluetooth capabilities, the Cobra Electronics 29 LTD BT CB remains the same as your average CB.

I can’t remember the last time I used a CB radio (if ever) and I’ve certainly never been behind the wheel of a big rig. However, since most truckers are already used to picking up their CB and keeping in touch  with others on the road, it only makes sense for them to do the same for their calls. This hi-tech take on a classic will set you back $189.95.

Moldable mouse wins Red Dot

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

There is no doubt that mouse is a very important device for every PC user. Because of this everyone should be very careful while choosing a mouse. As regards designers and producers they are to make it in such a way that it would be possible to ensure the most efficient, comfortable and harmless usage. A great attempt to meet all these points was made by Moldable Mouse designers.

The Moldable Mouse Concept designed by Lite-On Technology and P&C Design Center has won the Red Dot award: design concept 2007 in the Productivity and Work category. It’s made of lightweight modeling clay and covered with nylon and polyurethane blends fabric, and users can knead it into different shapes they like. Most high-tech counterparts claim to be ergonomically designed, but in case you ask people who spend all the day sitting in front of the computer, you will find out that it is not exactly so.

The Moldable Mouse infuses a bit of fun and game into the computing process. On a more serious note, by allowing a wide variety of hand positions when holding the mouse, it reduces repeated motions of the same posture, thereby minimizing the chance of common mouse-related injuries such as the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The click buttons and touch-sensitive scroll pad of the Moldable Mouse are stick-on parts with built-in RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Device), which can be repositioned for maximum comfort.

Thus, it’s hard to imagine a device that would be more ergonomic than this mouse. It’s always a great pleasure to read about such wonderful gadgets that significantly improve our life activity.

A kayak you can stand in

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

You can’t normally fish and kayak at the same time (unless you enjoy getting wet), however that could change with the new fisherman’s kayak.

This is the only kayak available that uses a patented extendable outrigger system to stabilize the craft, enabling outdoor enthusiasts to fish from a standing position. Made of durable polyethylene with stainless steel and aluminum hardware, the kayak has two independent outriggers that pivot outward 45 to its centerline, yet both swing back into position to form the aft section of the craft to allow for smooth paddling.

The fisherman’s kayak costs $1,899.95 and is available at Hammacher.

New camera tech can detect blood and water content in your car. Ew.

Ever on the lookout for the next step in up in Big Brother policy, there’s a new camera technology being developed in the UK at Loughborough University which can count car occupants by figuring out how much water and blood content there is inside the car. The obvious application is for trimming down those carpool lane offenders, trying to squeeze by the law with a dummy or a pet in the passenger seat. Look, privacy concerns aside, there’s just something awkward about traffic cams tracking quantities of blood and water inside of commuter cars. Do we really want to let the Machines have that kind of inside (literally) information on us?
