The Space Age Looking Silverfish Aquarium

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

This tank looks like it belongs in an apartment on Venus in the year 2500. The designers of this fun, unique tank say that because of the filter system, its actually easier to clean than a standard rectangular tank. I find that a little hard to believe, but this tank is so cool, I’d imagine it would be worth the work to keep it up. It would definitely be a showpiece in your home.

Apparently somewhere along the way Dean Kamen’s robo-prosthestesis came to be called the Luke arm (care to guess why?), and according to the IEEE Spectrum blog, it’s gearing up to undergo Food and Drug Administration trials pending DARPA’s final thumbs-up, which would put the project in motion. Be sure to check out the rest of the profile of the arm’s development, which is well worth the read.

Vudu software update offers users more HD content

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

With the AppleTV “take 2” still not available, Vudu seems to be willing to put up a strong fight to remain in the market. It was just last week that Vudu lowered their price by 25% and have now added more HD content.

A new update, that will bring the software to version 1.2 will add about 80 more movies and also adds an on-screen broadband instant-HD indicator. The movies are priced starting at $4 each, which is comparable to the AppleTV pricing. The indicator will help the instant start movies by giving users an alert as to whether or not their current broadband speed will be able to handle the movie without any delays in watching. It also has a recommendation option that will help you choose the best movies based on your broadband speed. Like other competing services, the eventual winner will come down to who has the better user experience and more available content.

Kaossilator: Lute of the Future

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

Who’d need traditional synthesisers when the Kaossilator is around? A pocket-sized device, Kaossilator is the synthesiser of the future…

…provided that it catches on. You see, unlike traditional synthesisers, you play the Kaossilator by tapping your fingers on the touchpad. Swiping your finger from left to right means a change of pitch, while up and downwards changes the sound. Not only that, the Kaossilator also has built-in drum beats and with its “loop recording feature,” you get to create mixes by layering different sounds of your choice. Even the tone-deaf could pretend to be a Beethoven!

If you’re ready to create some modern music, head on over to ThinkGeek where the Kaossilator sells for approximately 100.

The Playstation 3 beta program continues with 120GB PS3

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

Never in my life have I seen the same computing product get more hardware changes than software updates. Yes, I’m talking about Sony’s Playstation 3, a product that is now starting on what can only be described as its third major retail beta program… with a fourth supposedly in the works.

According to an Engadget report, Gamestop has done everything but dole out the ISBN numbers on the packaging for the still unconfirmed 120GB Playstation 3. Was 80GB too small for their top tier PS3? No, of course not. It was too small to also be bundled with the new DualShock 3 controller… the controller that should have been bundled with all PS3 models to begin with. Sorry to everyone who bought an 80GB PS3 in the last few weeks. No refunds or exchanges please.

Thinking about picking yourself up a new 20, 40, 60, 80, or 120 Gig PS3 in the coming months and want to know which is the safest buy? Click on through to find out.

Samsung SGH-A737 Review - MobileBurn

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

MobileBurn reviews the Samsung SGH-A737 and writes, “Opening the phone also reveals the 1.3 Megapixel camera lens on the opposite side of the earpiece/speaker. Next to the camera lens is a convex mirror to aid in framing self portraits. Sadly there’s no flash, but you can’t expect everything in a phone at this price point.”

Microsoft tabled bid for Yahoo

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

Microsoft has tabled a $44.6 billion bid for its rival, Yahoo, fully exposing Yahoo’s weakness to the world that the latter does not seem to have any hope of turning things around - especially after a rather bleak 2008 outlook and the decision to drop 1,000 employees from its payroll when February rolls around. Not a very pleasant Valentine’s Day then, eh? Yahoo has not jumped at the offer yet, since they decided that they will think about it. In a statement issued by the beleaguered dot com company, Yahoo mentioned that it would evaluate the offer “carefully and promptly in the context of Yahoo’s strategic plans.” There was no time frame given for a response, but surely it can’t be too long.

As it is, the $44.6 billion figure arrived with Microsoft offering $31 dollars a share - pretty generous considering that’s a 62% premium over Yahoo’s $19.18 closing price yesterday. This bid will include both cash and stock, and Microsoft has mentioned that Yahoo shareholders will be able to pick and choose what they wanted, with a 50-50 split being the most likely option. $44.6 billion is no joke even for a corporate giant like Microsoft, who’s most expensive acquisition to date was forking out $6 billion for aQuantive. One will also have to think about the integration risks that are very real - while Yahoo has way more traffic than Microsoft, the former have failed to monetized it. Also, don’t forget that Yahoo is working with Sansa by offering music selections on their site, which is a rival to Microsoft’s Zune so it will be pretty hard to see how things work out that way. In addition, you get Yahoo widgets on Apple’s iPhone, which again, Microsoft isn’t too bosom with.

I can only wonder what Google thinks of all this. Will the synergies of both Yahoo and Microsoft be enough to take on the behemoth at Mountain View, or will Microsoft’s ‘economy of scale’ strategy fail this time round? Heck, will Google even step in and make a bid of their own?
